Traditionally, publishers have had to make an informed
guess as to how many copies are likely to be sold in the marketplace
- not an easy task - and miscalculations meant that a book went
out of print quite quickly if they underestimated, or had to be
sold off at below cover price if they overestimated. Because of
the complex market forces that need to be taken account of, traditional
publishers are wary of taking the risk of publishing unproven authors,
so most submitted manuscripts never see the light of day. Prior
to print-on-demand, the great publishing houses also had to maintain
a huge and expensive inventory of titles in print. Fortunately for
you and I, this is no longer the case. |
